Sans Amp DI box
I don't understand WHY people rave about these. Mostly bought a DI
for my EUB. and it works fine for that. but on the electric basses... I'll
pass. I prefer the sound of my basses going straight into the mixer. then
out to headphones. Maybe because I'm not recording and mastering? Maybe
because I like things simple? The basses just sound more open without it. and it's easier to get a good
sound without it (less levels to mess me up).
you can dial in some... lumpy distortion (like lumps in my boxers). I don't see the benefit? I'm just not listening for the right stuff? forget it. I don't think it's good to add in front OR behind my
Thunderfunk. though I carry it just in case (that part I get).
I know a lot of people get their panties in a bunch when I say I don't
like Ampeg heads (except the original classic SVT all-tube) and can't
see what the fuss is about.
I maystill buy one for my church gig. just on price alone. I need a good
preamp/bufferbox to feed the DI and I can't afford this yet:

I too returned a Sans Amp after testing it a week or so. Just didn't
do enough to justify the price. I bought the MXR Bass DI+ instead. I
only use it when I go direct to the PA for rehearsals though. I
haven't needed a dirty tone enough to integrate it into my live rig.
I've mentioned my love/hate relationship with it. Use the blend and
it's alot nicer. I usually have the blend at 50% or less.
I really like mine (the programmable one) because it gives some versatility
to my sound. and I really like the dark. warm sound I can get from it. I
don't like the bright sound very much.
My EUB has NO preamp or tone/volume controls. so I do need it for that. Not
at all a waste... but less than I expected.
I always thought my sans amp was some of the best money I've
spent. I don't use it regularly with my rig. but (with distortion off)
I always thought it added a beautiful (maybe not transparent) depth and
fatness to my sound. especially if the rig I'm using at the time is
inferior. Last night. typical usage: new project at a new (to me)
rehearsal studio. didn't know the gear they had on hand. threw mine in
my briefcase just in case. Easy insurance. BTW. then into the amp.
I'm not sayin' there aren't better units out there - haven't heard them
all. but I've always liked my sans amp. One vote for the other side.
